Yes We Can: Songs About Leaving Africa

The record stores are full of them, but have you ever thought about what's involved in making a compilation
July 2010

Yes We Can is a compilation of songs from Africa which deal with the issue of migration, produced by Rose Skelton and Outhere Records. Some of the songs had been previously released, like Somali rapper K'naan's 'Fifteen Minutes', but most of the tracks were previously unreleased or commissioned specially for the compilation. The compilation took three years to make, and was inspired by the Senegalese migration crisis of 2006, when thousands of young Senegalese set sail for the Canary Islands in fishing boats looking for a better life, thousands more dying along the way. These songs deal with all aspects of leaving Africa, from visas to illegal documents to Western Union money transfers.
